Dave Cooper.

I was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire in 1956, the son of a professional county cricketer. My interest in gathering information about artists and bands that played on records led me to contribute articles for various periodicals. I edited The Artie Shaw Club Journal/Big Bands Unlimited from 1974-77.

I was playing music in various outfits in and around Blackburn, Lancashire where my family had moved to in 1964. As I turned professional, my scribblings were put on hold for a number of years.

My musical career took me all over the world on cruise liners including SS Calypso, MS Leonid Sobinov, Cunard Princess, SS Black Watch, MS Mikhail Lermantov. Residencies included May Fair Hotel in London and of course many hotels in Blackpool, Lancashire, where I now live.

I picked up my pen again in the early 1990s and write regularly for Memory Lane Magazine on the subject of gramophones and records.

My books have mirrored my admiration and interest in the life of jazz musician Buddy Rich.

My recent projects have included a series on trumpeter Bitsy Mullins for Memory Lane magazine and my new book
"The Perfect Portable Gramophone - 'His Master's Voice"
is now available.
